Just a Little Scare

So, Jillian hasn't been feeling well. I know, for anyone who sees her regularly, you think I am going crazy right about now. But she hides it very well.
This weekend while we were in Burley, Jillian's blood pressure spiked--I know Steve, Jillian already wrote about this-- well today she was a little more swollen than the norm for her now, and she wasn't feeling well. So she went to the doctor at 4:30 and her blood pressure was 155/90 or so. So our doctor told her she needed to go to the hospital. Thinking "Okay, I'll run over there tomorrow" she asked "When?"
-"Tonight. You can go home and change if you'd like, but I would really like you to go right now."
That was all the convincing she needed. She called me on her way, picked me up from home, and we went to the hospital. There was no delay in getting her off her feet, hooked up to a fetal monitor, getting an ultrasound, taking her blood, and getting a urine sample. half of these things were done before they formally checked Jillian in. For anyone who's ever been to a hospital for ANYTHING, you know this is beyond unusual.
The nurses were great, and Dr. Hall even showed up about 15 minutes after getting there to check on us. It turns out that they were afraid she might have toxemia, a condition that is unprovoked- last week she was like 116/20- that can lead to a whole bunch of scary things. They kept her and monitored her for a few hours, during which time her blood pressure continued to maintain pretty high levels. The nurse gave us a very thorough rundown of the risks of toxemia and what it could mean.
Thankfully, we were joined by two of our friends, Andrea and Kari, who brought us dinner and the cutest baby clothes. Having them there was a real comfort, and seemed to relax Jillian a lot too.
After a few hours of monitoring and running tests, Dr. Hall called to tell us that the tests were "okay" and that Jillian could go home, but that she was on strict bedrest until he sees her on Friday. He told her if everything looks good then, he may let her go back to work on Monday. I wanted to tell him good luck with holding her to that, but in addition to being our friend, Andrea is also Jillian's manager at work, so make no mistake, Jillian will be home for the long haul.

So Jillian will be hanging out in bed for a few days! Feel free to call her or drop by if you're around. She's been in bed for almost two hours now, and she is already going stir crazy saying how miserable this week is going to be. We still think everything will be fine, but when you get a scare like that at only 30 weeks, I guess you can't take it too lightly.

MAKE SURE and follow the doctors orders!!!! I have had A LOT of experience with toxemia and it is not anything you want to mess with. I had Jonathan at 32 weeks after being hospitalized for a week with toxemia. Jared's wife, Mimi, had one baby at 34 weeks (3 weeks in the hospital before delivery) and one at 30 weeks due to toxemia. Drink LOTS of water and eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and STAY IN BED!!!!

Well, at least if you're still on bed rest next week (hopefully you wont be), it'll make it easier for me to stop by! :) And when I have more time I am going to check out that money-making ad thing.

Be careful with prepackaged snacks. Homemade things are pretty good, but try and stay away from things with preservatives. It hasn't been proven that this makes a difference, but I have certainly noticed that it makes a difference.

Every week that you keep the bun in the oven will be VERY beneficial!! Our granddaughter, Lucy, was born at 30 weeks and weighed 3lbs 1oz and had to be in the NICU for 7 weeks. Jonathan was born at 32 weeks and weighed 4lbs and was in the NICU for 4 weeks. Benjamin, our other grandson, was born at 34 weeks weighed 5 lbs 1oz and in the NICU for 3 weeks.

It is just something you want to try to avoid at all costs (ie. being bored and resting!!!)
