Our plan when we were first married was for Steve to get his bachelors degree and then for us to move on to a Masters program shortly after that well, obviously that never happened. We loved Idaho Falls and we both really enjoyed our jobs and the path that we were on so we just put more schooling on the back burner but I would often find Steve secretly searching online different schools and different programs he was interested in. Our move to Tucson was a answer to our prayers in so many ways. We absolutely enjoyed and loved living next to our family the Herrs and being able to bond and be around their family so much, they were huge help to us while we lived there as well. Tucson holds some very, very special friends as well. I've never felt so loved and taken care of as I did with my family, friends, and neighbors, we were spoiled! Steve started looking into graduate programs more seriously and he found a program in communications that he was seriously interested in but we just kept thinking this wasn't our time, we now had 2 kids and I had this stupid blood clot so we needed to have insurance so we just pushed it off and out of the picture and continued living and enjoying our life.
One Saturday we were driving around and just started talking about our future and I brought up schooling to Steve and he said he'd love to get into this program at BYU but that they only accept 13 people a year and that he'd have to take his GRE and he hadn't been in school in over 7 years, it was overwhelming just listening to all the hesitations and concerns. I got online and looked at when the deadline for the application was and the deadline was coming up quickly so we talked about it and decided we would just try and if it worked out it worked out great and if not then we'd know it wasn't in the cards for now. Long story short by the time Steve took his GRE it would be a miracle if it was graded and submitted to the school in time for the deadline. We applied and went about our business
A very short while later, sooner than we expected Steve got a email that he was accepted into the program at BYU and that he received a half tuition scholarship! Ironically, that same day Steve was called by a company in Phoenix and they were really interested in him for a great position in their marketing program and wanted him to come for an interview.
We went for the interview and it went wonderfully. They wanted him to come back for a second interview so we were thinking of taking that job and leaving school behind again. It ended up that BYU called Steve and told him after reviewing his application further that they were really interested and excited in him attending this program and that they'd like to offer him a full tuition scholarship and a part-time position working with a professor for the duration of the program. I think we both knew the whole time that Steve was supposed to go back to school, we have known for a while but we were afraid of how to support a family and live on a college student budget. In May we made the final decision that we would be moving to Provo and becoming students at 30 years old.
It felt so right and great. It was not an easy decision and we were worried but we put our faith in the Lord and knew that he would provide a way for us if we were responsible and smart about our decisions. It was so hard because Steve turned down 2 potential jobs after we made this decision and in today's market that was a heart wrenching decision but we stayed strong.
Our next stop.....Provo, Utah.
