Huckleberry Hunting

Last weekend Steve and I got up and went up huckleberry hunting. We had fun.

It really was a lot of fun, and any of you who have not done it will probably never know what you are missing out on. We escaped the traffic, noise, and overall crowded nature of the city for real nature. For those of you who have been lucky enough to have someone share the location of their huckleberry spot with you, you know that you have found a truly special part of God's country. Often you have to hike to a place where the sounds of nature have drowned out the noise of "civilization."

And even when we got to the location, a whole year of the drain of life had eroded our memories of how consuming this adventure was. At first we couldn't find them! But as we relaxed and settled into our surroundings they started appearing everywhere. I would dare say they appeared before us, but those of you reading this would probably think that we were ingesting something besides the huckleberries on that mountain.

In the end we spent 3 hours hunting for and picking about a quart of berries. Yup, you heard right- this is not a sport for the city dweller who has contracted the ADD virus. This is for the few, the strong- those willing to wake up, completely disregard fashion and brave what at least three people too many have warned us is "real" bear country. We really need to pick up some bear spray if we're going to keep surviving in this part of the world.

And Jillian and the baby were such good sports, though I think we all snuck a few berries that never made it into our buckets.

So if you ever find your way to Southeastern Idaho during August, feel free to join us for a truly unforgettable experience.
